Finding a picture of Hinda

Writer's picture: Jessica FeinsteinJessica Feinstein

I wrote about Hinda, who was Ari and Eva's 4x great-grandmother, back in 2018. Recently, I was given a photo album belonging to Hinda's granddaughter, my grandmother Judith Katz.

She had compiled the album in the 1920s, and the first page had four photos taken at Folkestone and Felixstowe:

Behind one of the photos was a loose round photo, which I had never seen before. On the back, in my grandfather Harry's writing, it said 'Judith's grandmother (Katz)'.

This was the first time I had seen Hinda's face.

The photo matched one I already had, of her husband Isaac Katz:

Since I last wrote about Hinda, who died in 1916, I have obtained her burial authorisation:

This confirmed that she had been in England for 18 years, having arrived on the Ophelia from Hamburg on 7 September 1898.

I also obtained a record from the archives in Dnipropetrovs'k, Ukraine, which could be the record of the marriage of Isaac and Hinda in 1863:

I requested help with the translation on JewishGen's ViewMate, and Jonathan Michael Wien kindly confirmed that the bridegroom was 'Itski' [more likely Itsek/Itsko], son of Leib Krivitski, grandson of a merchant, from Kremenchug, 19, and the bride was Keyla, daughter of the merchant Ayzik Yaringrozava, Yekaterinoslav, 18.

So it's possible that her original name was Keyla Ginda Yaringrozava.

The archival records also included a son, Mordukh, born on 5 March 1864 in Ekaterinoslav (Dnipropetrovs’k), but not the births of the children I knew about, who were born later. So I would still like to find confirmation that this was actually her name. I am hopeful that, as more Ukrainian records are found and scanned, more evidence will turn up soon!
